The 50/30/20 Rule (And Why Moms Might Need to Adjust It)

You've probably heard of the 50/30/20 rule: 50% on needs, 30% on wants, 20% on savings. It's a great framework, but as a mom, you might need to adjust it.

The Traditional Breakdown:

  • 50% Needs (housing, utilities, groceries, minimum debt payments)

  • 30% Wants (entertainment, dining out, hobbies)

  • 20% Savings (emergency fund, retirement, debt payoff)
  • The Mom Reality:
Kids change everything. Childcare alone can eat up 20-30% of your budget. School expenses, activities, and those growth spurts? They add up fast.

    My Adjusted Formula:

  • 55-60% Needs (including childcare and kid essentials)

  • 15-20% Wants (yes, you still deserve some!)

  • 20-25% Savings (non-negotiable for your future)

Tips for Making It Work:
1. Childcare is a need, not a want
2. Kids' activities? Be selective. Quality over quantity.
3. Meal planning saves more than you think
4. Automate your savings so it happens before you see it

The percentages matter less than having a plan that actually works for YOUR family. Start where you are and adjust as you go.
