Teaching Kids About Money: Age-by-Age Guide

One of the best gifts we can give our kids is financial literacy. Here's how I approached it with my two daughters:

Ages 3-5: The Basics
Use a clear piggy bank so they can see money grow. Let them hand money to cashiers. Play store at home.

Ages 6-10: Earning and Saving
Introduce an allowance tied to chores. Create three jars: Save, Spend, Give. Let them make small purchasing decisions.

Ages 11-14: Budgeting Basics
Give them a clothing budget for the school year. Open a savings account in their name. Discuss how your household budget works.

Ages 15-18: Real World Prep
Help them open a checking account. Teach them about credit cards and debt. Have them contribute to big purchases (car, prom).

The Secret Ingredient
The most powerful teaching tool? Letting them see YOU manage money well. They're always watching.

Both my daughters graduated university with strong financial habits because we started early. You can do the same!
